Key takeaways
•
Surat gives you water, old brick and green parks inside one city. Pick the place for the light at your shooting hour, then check hours and rules, which change.
•
Dumas is a sunset location and the municipal sea face now stays open until 8 PM. The Tapi riverbank and Sarthana work best early or late in the day, when the sun is low and the crowd is thin.
•
Entry fees and opening hours are quoted differently by different sources. Call the venue or check the official channel before you tell a client the plan.
•
Always carry a backup within a short drive and a shaded or indoor fallback. In Surat the heat and the evening crowd close a location faster than any rule does.
Search for "photoshoot locations in Surat" and most results are travel lists written for visitors. They tell you a place exists. They do not tell you where the sun will be at 5:30 pm, how many people will be standing in your frame, or what the guard will say when you open a tripod.
This guide is written for the person who has to run the shoot: a photographer with a couple, a make-up artist and a bag of lenses, or a client who wants to know what a sensible plan looks like before briefing someone. It covers the places that work for pre-wedding, engagement, family and portrait sessions in and around Surat, with the light, the access questions and a backup for each.
A note on facts. Most of these places are public and run by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) or by an operator who sets their own rules. Hours, fees and permission rules change, and different websites quote different numbers. We say where sources disagree and where we could not confirm something. Treat anything about permits as a list of questions to ask, not an answer.

Start with the season and the clock

Surat is a coastal city on the Tapi, and its light follows a simple pattern.
From roughly October to March the day opens up. Mornings and evenings are comfortable, golden hour is long and travel guides consistently name this as the best stretch for outdoor visits. It is also when wedding parties, college groups and families crowd the popular places, so weekends fill up fast.
From April to September plan for heat, haze and the monsoon. The outdoor window shrinks to the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. In the rains, grass and water look lush, but you need rain covers, a plan for slippery ground and a date you can move.
Work backwards from sunset. Look up the sunset time for your date, add travel, and book the golden-hour location first. Our guide to timing a pre-wedding shoot walks through the full schedule, including blue hour and open shade.

Dumas: the sunset location

Dumas is about 21 km southwest of the city centre and is the usual answer when a couple asks for a beach. The shore is known for its dark sand, and the open horizon over the Arabian Sea gives you clean skies, silhouettes and a long, flat edge to compose against.

Light and timing

Face west and the sun sets over the water, so this is an evening location. Arrive an hour before sunset to walk the shoreline and choose your frame. For sunrise, the light comes from behind the land, so the sky is softer and the beach is quieter.

Access and rules

SMC has been developing the Dumas sea face with a promenade, walkway, cycle track, play area and parking. A June 2026 municipal announcement said the sea face, which had been open from 6 AM to 7 PM, would now stay open until 8 PM. That is the most recent hours information we found, so confirm it before you plan a late finish. Most guides say entry is free. We found no source on permission for professional shoots, so ask SMC or the on-site staff if you are bringing lights, reflectors, a tripod or a large crew.

Practical notes

Wind and fine sand are the real enemies. Keep lenses capped between frames, change them in the car, and bring a blower and a clean cloth. Water, shade and a plan for changing clothes need arranging in advance. Many online stories call the beach haunted; treat that as local folklore and do not build a client pitch around it.
Tip: The beach empties after dark and the lighting is limited. Finish your portraits by the time the municipal hours end and keep the team together on the way back.

The Tapi riverbank

The Tapi runs through the heart of Surat, and its banks give you the one thing the sea cannot: city and water in the same frame. Old buildings, bridges, steps and walkways sit next to open sky.

Light and timing

Go early. One pre-wedding guide recommends sunrise for the riverfront because it gets crowded in the evening. Low morning light from the side shows stone and brick texture, and the water is calm. In the evening, the riverbank becomes a walking and family space, and you will fight for clear frames.

Access and rules

The riverbank is a long stretch with different stretches managed in different ways, and not every walkway is open at all hours. Walk your exact route a few days before, note the nearest parking and the nearest toilet, and ask the staff on site what they allow. If you plan to use a drone near the water or the bridges, check the current rules first; our guide to drone wedding photography covers the questions to ask.
Tip: Photograph the same stretch at two times if the budget allows: a quiet early look for portraits and a short evening look for lights on the water.

Dutch Garden and the heritage corner

Dutch Garden, on Dutch Garden Road in Nanpura, is one of the easiest spots for greenery, lawns and the river on one side. Listing sites quote hours of 9 AM to 6 PM with a closing day on Mondays, but we could not confirm this from an official source, so check before you travel.
Nearby, the Dutch and Armenian cemetery on the Katargam side is full of brick tombs that photograph beautifully under a blue sky. It is also a burial ground and a piece of the city's history. Ask before you plan a styled couple shoot there, keep props and costumes modest and leave the place as you found it.

Light and timing

Late afternoon is best for the garden: the sun is lower, the lawns are warm and the tombs and brick pick up side light. At midday, use shade under trees and keep the bright sky out of the frame.

Gopi Talav

Gopi Talav in the Gopipura area is a historic tank. It is described as built around 1510 by Malik Gopi, a merchant and governor of Surat, and has been redeveloped into a recreational area with gardens, fountains and walking paths. We found no source for its current entry fee, hours or rules for professional shoots, so treat it as a place to scout and ask about rather than a promise to a client.
The attraction is the old tank edge, the reflections and the mix of heritage and city life. Visit on a weekday morning to check the light on the water and the number of people.

Sarthana Nature Park

Sarthana Nature Park is a zoo and park of roughly 81 acres on the edge of the city. It suits greenery, trees, a small lake and picnic areas. The official zoo listing gives 10 AM to 5 PM and a Monday closing day, with tickets bought online through the SMC portal. Entry fees are quoted differently in different places (₹15 on the official listing for an adult, higher figures elsewhere), so confirm the rate at the gate or on the official site.
Because the park closes at 5 PM, you cannot plan a golden-hour finish here. Use it for a mid-morning or early afternoon session in shade, and keep shots of animals out of any plan unless the management agrees. Ask in writing whether a professional crew, props and tripods are allowed and whether there is a charge for a commercial shoot.

A sample day

Here is a simple plan for a couple in the October to March season.
1.
6:15 AM: Tapi riverbank, quiet portraits with low side light.
2.
8:30 AM: Breakfast and a change of outfit near the car.
3.
10:30 AM to 1 PM: Sarthana Nature Park or Dutch Garden, in tree shade.
4.
Midday: Rest. Hair, make-up and charging happen here.
5.
3:45 PM: Drive to Dumas, taking traffic into account.
6.
5 PM until close: Beach, golden hour and sunset, finishing well before the municipal closing time.
If the weather turns, your backup is a covered or indoor space within a short drive. Our guide to photographing couples in small spaces has ideas for a hotel room, a cafe or a corridor.

Questions to ask before you promise a place

•
Is entry free, and is there a separate charge for a professional or commercial shoot?
•
Are tripods, reflectors, lights, drones and props allowed?
•
What are the opening and closing hours this month, and is there a closing day?
•
Where do we park, and how far is the carry from the car to the frame?
•
Where will we change clothes, and is there shade and water?
•
What is the backup if the place is closed, crowded or refuses us?
Our guide to scouting shoot locations turns these questions into a checklist you can use on a scouting visit.

Pricing and briefing a location shoot

Price the shoot for the travel and the waiting, not only the hours with the camera. A sunrise start in one part of the city and a sunset finish at the coast can mean a long day with a gap in the middle. Say in your quote how many locations are included, what happens if a place is closed, and who pays for entry fees and parking. Send the client the list of places with the time, parking point and what to wear a few days before.
If you are a client planning a session, you can post your project with the date, the places you like and your budget, and photographers will respond with their rate and availability. If you are a photographer, create your profile so couples looking for a Surat shoot can find your work.

Final checklist

•
Choose the location for the light at your hour, then check access.
•
Confirm hours and fees on the official channel or by phone within a week of the shoot.
•
Walk the route and check parking, shade, toilets and the nearest backup.
•
Protect gear from sand, wind, heat and rain.
•
Be respectful at heritage and burial sites.
•
Brief the client in writing with times, places and a plan for rain or closure.
